An estimated 30 million Americans over the age of 12 have some form of a hearing impairment. For people with hearing loss, hearing aid devices can be a life changing investment. They can literally help to open up a world of sound and improve your quality of life.

Like many things, it’s only once the hearing aids have a problem that our dependence on them is made clear.

At Audiology Associates, we understand the importance of your hearing aid devices. However, we’re also aware that sometimes, unfortunately, they do experience some problems! We’re taking a closer look at 5 reasons hearing aids break.

5 Reasons Hearing Aids Break

It’s not the most ideal situation to find yourself in. Your hearing aid devices are not working as they should be. Daily maintenance can help protect your hearing aid devices. But even daily care doesn’t always stop unforeseen problems from arising.

Understanding what is causing the issue can help you troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem. Here are 5 reasons hearing aids break, and how you may be able to fix the issue.

Your Hearing Aid Is Making Noises

Feedback or a whistling noise in your device is typically an indication that it isn’t well-fitted. A well-fitting hearing aid should be snug. To determine if a poor fit is causing a sound leak, turn your volume down.

If the noise stops, it’s likely a poor fit causing the issue. We recommend coming in to speak with the team at Audiology Professionals. Our hearing care specialists will be able to check the fit, and also validate that you don’t have any wax build up in your ears.

Your Hearing Aid Has Gotten Wet

Your hearing aid will naturally be exposed to some moisture. If, however, it’s gotten wet, leave it out to air. Alternatively, you can place it in a bag of uncooked rice to soak up excess moisture. Remember, always remove your hearing aids before showering, taking a bath or swimming.

The Sound Is Weak

When was your last hearing assessment? Weak sound could be an indication that your hearing has changed. Maybe it’s time to book in your annual hearing assessment with the hearing healthcare specialists at Audiology

The Sound Is Distorted

Check for corrosion on the battery or contact points. If you notice any corrosion, your local hearing specialist can advise on how to safely clean your hearing aid.

The Aid Is Not Working

It may sound silly, but check that the hearing aid is actually switched on!

If you are experiencing any of the above problems, this checklist can help you further troubleshoot:

✓ Is the battery in correctly? (The door should close easily, and the aid then switches on.)

✓ Replace the battery.

✓ Check the microphone, tubing, dome and mold for any moisture or waxy blockage. Remove the tubing gently, clean and let dry.

✓ Is the volume at the correct level?

✓ Is it on the correct setting/program? Ensure you haven’t left it on the “T” setting (for loop listening)

✓ Does the device look damaged? Is the tubing squashed or cracked? If it is, contact us today.
